The Colors of Burguete

Roncesvalles to Zubiri – 21.4km

Shortly after leaving Roncesvalles, we took a path through a forest of oak and beech trees which ended in this lovely, photogenic village of Burguete. Whitewashed buildings, colorful, juicy fruits and veggies, a wall mural peeling away over the years, the ever-present scallop shell, the typical church in the center of town, funny-looking sculptured trees, and on to the next burg.

Ernest Hemingway lodged in Burguete in 1924 and 1925 for a fishing trip to the Irati River, and describes it in his novel The Sun Also Rises.
