The Town Next to the Bridge

Entering the small village of Zubiri, Spain – “Zubiri” means ‘next to the bridge’ and refers to the 14th century bridge built over the Rio Arga. ¬†According to tradition, the Puente de la Rabia (Bridge of Rabies) was named so because Santa Quiteria, the protector of the disease, is buried under the central pillar. The bridge itself was thought to cure rabies and hydrophobia in animals by either walking across it or circling around its base a few times.
